“Cooking is like love, it should be entered into with abandon or not at all.”
-Harriet Van Horne
Cooking is a journey that many embark on, either out of necessity or a desire to explore their culinary creativity. However, amidst the mouthwatering recipes and pictures of perfectly plated dishes that flood our social media feeds, there’s a side of cooking that often goes untold – the failures.
As a beginner in the kitchen myself, I understand the frustrations and disappointments that come with burnt meals, undercooked dishes, and what seemed to be simple experiments gone wrong. In this blog, I aim to share my cooking journey, complete with the trials and tribulations I encounter along the way.
Cooking has always been an interest of mine but I found it too intimidating to pursue and instead found myself a sweet southern chef to cozy up with for the last six years. However, since I recently left my job and have found myself with ALOT of free time, I decided to take the plunge and explore the world of culinary arts; I mean it can’t be that hard.. right?
With each recipe I try, I learn new techniques, discover unique flavor combinations, and gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and creativity that goes into creating delicious meals.
I can’t guarantee that my posts will offer any groundbreaking insights, or that I can teach you everything about cooking, from the basics to the intricacies of culinary arts. However, I can promise to share my personal experiences, both successes and failures and everything in between.
After experimenting with new recipes for just a few weeks, I’ve discovered that cooking can be incredibly enjoyable. I’ve also realized that many talented home cooks share their recipes with the world, but often fail to explain the reasoning behind their methods.
Have you ever stumbled upon a recipe on Pinterest that you felt you just had to try, but upon opening it, you found yourself struggling to understand the instructions or the list of ingredients?
It’s a common experience, especially for beginners. I do not mean to suggest that these recipes are bad or that you should not attempt them, but sometimes the language used in these recipes can be difficult to follow. Even when the recipe author attempts to break it down into easy steps, it may still be too complicated for you to understand.
That’s where I come in – I’m here to help.
Lesson #1 – and this was a HARD one for me to embrace – sometimes, it’s not your fault, it’s theirs. And that’s perfectly fine. Once in a while, you may come across a recipe that doesn’t turn out the way you expected. Learn from your mistakes, but also keep an open mind when you fail, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Through this blog, I hope to inspire beginners to embrace their culinary adventures and find joy in cooking. The unknown can be both thrilling and scary, but the result is incredibly worth it!
